EXT. BUTCH’S BALCONY – DAY

Cigarette in mouth, Butch pedals a stationary bike, puffing and pedaling in unison, looking like a steam locomotive.

BUTCH
Come on, Richard. You know she’s
no sociopath.

Elbows on the railing of his balcony, Richard stares at the horizon, expressionless.

RICHARD
She might as well be. When it
comes to making my life miserable,
she’s got the unrelenting single-
minded purpose of one.

BUTCH
Well, you gotta admire her
tenacity.

Richard gives Butch a dirty look.

RICHARD
Try to remember you’re on my side,
okay?

BUTCH
Speaking of sides, I still think
you can get on her good side.

RICHARD
Really?
理查德
真的?

BUTCH
Sure!... Anyway, what else can you
do? She keeps outsmarting you.

Richard gives Butch another dirty look.

RICHARD
Oh, there’s plenty of things I
could do! Believe me!

Puffing on his cigarette, Butch examines Richard calmly.

BUTCH
You really have no idea what to do,
do you?

Richard slumps.

RICHARD
No.
理查德
是的。

BUTCH
Offer to help her with her
homework.

RICHARD
Are you serious? She doesn’t need
my help.

BUTCH
Well, she must need help with
something. Point is, just be nice.

Richard looks confused. He watches Butch pedaling.

RICHARD
Why the hell do you exercise and
smoke at the same time, anyway?

BUTCH
Better smoke and exercise than
smoke and no exercise.

Richard shakes his head and looks away.

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE RICHARD’S BEDROOM – LATER THAT DAY

Richard KNOCKS.

DENISE (O.S.)
Come in.

He opens the door.

INSIDE BEDROOM

Inches from door, ferret Stanley squeaks and stands on hind legs to look at Richard.
Richard jerks back, partially shielding himself with the door.

RICHARD
Why didn’t you tell me he was right
by the door?

Sitting at the desk working on her computer, Denise looks at him in disbelief.

DENISE
Are you serious?

RICHARD
Could you please move him?

Denise shakes her head as though she’ s dealing with a child.

DENISE
Go back home, Stanley. This won’t
take long.

Stanley scurries back to his cage. Richard watches in amazement.

RICHARD
How did you do that?

DENISE
Kind of the opposite of your
therapy. The technique is called
mutual respect.

He closes the door and pulls a chair up next to her.

RICHARD
I didn’t come here to argue with
you, Denise. Actually, I came here
to...

He has a hard time getting out the words.

DENISE
Yes?

RICHARD
To see if you needed any help with
your homework.

Denise looks at him, trying to determine whether he’s lost his mind or he’s up to something.

DENISE
As a matter of fact, I do. I’m
having a hard time remembering
something.

Richard’s face lights up.

RICHARD
Lay it on me!

DENISE
What’s the ancient Mandarin word
for yan jing? Is it mu?

The bright look disappears. He grows serious.

DENISE (CONT’D)
It’s a joke!

He relaxes somewhat.

DENISE (CONT’D)
I need help with biology.

Richard smiles from ear to ear, beaming with confidence.

RICHARD
I know biology! I’m an M.D.

DENISE
Great! Can you explain the theory
of punctuated equilibrium as it
relates to evolution?

The smile disappears. He clears his throat.

RICHARD
What do you need to know?

DENISE
What’s your opinion regarding the
application of punctuated
equilibrium to the possibility of
intelligent life on other planets?

Deadly serious, he stares at Denise.

RICHARD
They don’t teach that branch of
biology in medical school.

DENISE
Do they teach math in medical
school? I have a math question for
you.

RICHARD
I’m sure you do.... Look, we got
off on the wrong foot. You don’t
want me to marry your mother, and I
just want you to know I respect
your feelings.

DENISE
So you’re not gonna marry her?

RICHARD
Yes, I am.... But that doesn’t
mean we shouldn’t try to be
friends. That’s all I’m trying to
do here. Be your friend.

DENISE
I have friends.

Richard notices a name written on an open notebook in front of Denise.

RICHARD
Is David Wang one of them?

Denise closes notebook quickly.

DENISE
Mind your own business!

RICHARD
Oh! I see.... Does he know you
like him?

She stares at him, annoyed.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Ahh! The shy type. Can I give you
some advice?

DENISE
No!

RICHARD
Make the first move. He probably
likes you, too. You’re smart and
pretty. Why wouldn’t he like you?
And if he’s shy, he’ll like you
more for talking to him first.

DENISE
I don’t need your advice. I can
handle my own affairs.

RICHARD
Okay. Just trying to be
helpful.... Well, I’ll leave you
to whatever it is you were doing.

He turns and heads for the door.

DENISE
You want to be helpful?

He stops and looks at her.

DENISE (CONT’D)
We’re having Career Day tomorrow.
My whole class is bringing a
relative to talk about what they
do.

Richard smiles.

INT. DENISE’S CLASSROOM – MORNING

The whole class applauds as a MAN finishes a presentation. Standing in the back, Richard applauds along with the class.
MISS SPENCER, Denise’s teacher, walks to the front of the class, as the Man waves goodbye and exits.

MISS SPENCER
Thank you, Mr. Chukowski. Class,
we have one more presentation, from
Denise’s friend, Dr.Utterman.
Denise, can you please introduce
Dr. Utterman to the class?

DENISE
Sure.
好的。

She rises from seat and walks to the front. Richard joins her standing to one side, a few feet away.

DENISE (CONT’D)
Well, as Miss Spencer said, his
name is Dr. Utterman.

Richard smiles and waves to the class.

DENISE (CONT’D)
He’s not a real doctor, though.
He’s a child psychiatrist. When
children have problems he uses what
they call therapy. Therapy
manipulates you in order to control
what you say, what you think, and
what you do.

A BOY in the front row looks scared. He glances over at Richard.

BOY
Woh!
男孩
哇!

DENISE
If therapy doesn’t work, he gets
you drugged up on pills that alter
your brain and turn you into a
different person.

Shocked, half the class turns to look at Richard, who smiles and nods to reassure them. This causes the Boy in the front row to get even more scared and look away quickly.

DENISE (CONT’D)
If the therapy and the drugs don’t
work, he hooks you up to a machine
that sends electricity to your
brain. The electricity knocks you
out and makes you shake
uncontrollably.

Their mouths slightly open the class stares in fear. Denise looks at Richard, who can’t believe she’s gotten him once more.

DENISE (CONT’D)
They’re all yours, Dr.Utterman.

Denise goes back to her seat. Richard remains standing where he is, trying to take it all in. Miss Spencer clears her throat.

MISS SPENCER
Thank you, Denise. Dr. Utterman?

Richard reacts and takes a few steps forward to face the class. He looks out at his audience. The whole class is scared of him.

RICHARD
(clears throat)
Let me first reassure you that I
have never used electric shocks.

A GIRL in the back raises her hand. Richard points at her.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Yes?

GIRL
Do other psychiatrists use it?

He hesitates.

RICHARD
Well, yes.
理查德

David Wang, seated in the front row, raises his hand.

DAVID
Do you use therapy and drugs to
change people?

RICHARD
Well, yes, but that’s not a bad
thing, like you think.

Their fears confirmed, the students look at each other, fearful and suspicious.
BOY #2 raises his hand. Richard motions to him.

BOY #2
My cousin went to jail for giving
drugs to people.

Richard shakes his head.

RICHARD
I don’t give people those kind of
drugs. My drugs are medicine.

BOY #3 raises his hand.

RICHARD (CONT’D)
Yes?

BOY #3
My uncle says he smokes pot for
medicinal purposes.

RICHARD
I don’t sell pot! Actually, I
Don’t even give out pills all that
often.

RICHARD (CONT'D)
I basically just talk to people. I
talk to people to try to convince
them of things. That’s all I do.
I am not a drug dealer!

Cute little GIRL WITH PONYTAIL raises her hand.

GIRL WITH PONYTAIL
So all you do is talk?

Richard smiles. Finally, someone gets it.

RICHARD
Yes!
理查德
对!

GIRL WITH PONYTAIL
Are you a good talker?

RICHARD
I think I’m a pretty good talker.

GIRL WITH PONYTAIL
Are you a conman?

RICHARD
What? No!
理查德

GIRL WITH PONYTAIL
My mom says conmen are good
talkers.

RICHARD
Psychiatrists are not conmen. It’s
their job to talk well in order to
persuade people.

David Wang raises his hand. Richard motions to him.

DAVID
You talk to people and then you
take their money?

RICHARD
Yes – I mean, no! I don’t take it.
They give it to me.

Cute little girl with ponytail turns to David confidentially.

GIRL WITH PONYTAIL
(whispers)
That’s just what a conman would
say.

Nods and murmurs of approval from the class. Sitting at her desk, Denise observes the scene quietly.

RICHARD
This is ridiculous. I am not a con
artist! I’m a respected
psychiatrist. I wrote a book, for
crying out loud.

Denise rises.

DENISE
Let’s take a vote. How many of you
think Dr. Utterman’s a con artist?

The entire class, except a FAT BOY with glasses in the front row, raises their hands.

DENISE (CONT’D)
How many think he’s not?

The whole class lowers their hands, but no hands go up.
After a few seconds the Fat Boy’s hand goes up
Richard smiles, visibly relieved. At least, his humiliation won’t be complete.

RICHARD
(motions to Fat Boy)
What do you think?

FAT BOY
Can I use the restroom?

DENISE

INT. DENISE’S CLASSROOM – LATER

MS. LANGE
I have an announcement. Due to an
unexpected, temporary closure of
the science museum, the office is
postponing our field trip until
further notice.

Denise sits alone in the waiting room full of women with children. A closed sliding glass window separates the waiting room from the office.
Denise starts twitching. No one pays attention. The twitching increases. Finally, FIRST WOMAN gives her a compassionate look.

FIRST WOMAN
What’s the matter, honey?

DENISE
It always happens afterwards.

FIRST WOMAN
After what?

DENISE
My shock treatments.

FIRST WOMAN
Shock!

DENISE
Yes. I’ve only had 53 treatments
and I’m almost better.

The Women exchange looks of shock, concern, and disbelief.

SECOND WOMAN
How is that even possible?

DENISE
Oh, it’s easy. He just wires me up
and cranks up the juice.

She rolls her eyes to the back of her head and mimics electricity running through her, her LIPS FLAPPING like loose pieces of meat. She slumps in her seat and imitates epileptic convulsions.
After a moment, she straightens up and smiles sweetly.

FIRST WOMAN
My God!

THIRD WOMAN
How does it make you feel?

DENISE
Great! Except for my muscle
twitching. But Dr. Utterman says
that’ll disappear completely by the
time I’m fifteen.

The Women exchange stupefied looks of horror.

DENISE (CONT’D)
(smiling brightly)
Which works out perfectly.

FIRST WOMAN
Perfectly?

DENISE
Just in time for my Sweet Sixteen.
Can you imagine getting an attack
of the shakes when I’m trying to
blow out my candles?

Denise puffs her cheeks with air to blow out imaginary candles and begins to twitch violently. Still, she tries to force air through her lips, red-faced and cross-eyed, but only manages to eject little droplets of spit.

DENISE (CONT’D)
How embarrassing would that be?

THIRD WOMAN
What does your mother think of all
this?

DENISE
She thinks Dr. Utterman’s a
genius.... And he is. I used to
be a really bad little girl.

SECOND WOMAN
I can’t believe Dr.Utterman would
be doing this.

FIRST WOMAN
Is it even legal with children?

DENISE
It is now, thanks to Dr. Utterman.
I’m his first patient!

The Women exchange looks of disbelief.
Denise looks at the waiting children.

DENISE (CONT’D)
But not for long.

The children look at their mothers like deer caught in headlights.

FIRST WOMAN
Come on, Eugene.

She grabs her son’s hand and walks out. The other Women follow suit. Denise is the only one left in the office. The glass window slides open.

RECEPTIONIST
Where’s everybody?

Looking innocent, Denise shrugs.
